A Practical Guide to Social Media for Real Life

This post provides personal guidance on selective social media use, recommending LinkedIn for professional updates and Instagram, Facebook and Blogspot for personal blogging and photo sharing. It also highlights the risk of misinformation online, especially among older users and offers a simple verification checklist. The content is original and reflects common digital-literacy themes rather than copying any specific source.

🧠📱 Why You Don’t Need Every Social Media App (Especially TikTok)

Sometimes I see people my age on TikTok and I wonder… why?
Not because it’s “bad” - but because it feels like wearing a suit to a beach picnic. 😅

Here’s the truth:
You don’t need to be on every social media app to be “connected.”
Especially if your goal is simply a personal blog and photo albums.

📌 What I’m using

LinkedIn - professional life, career updates
Instagram + Facebook + Blogspot - personal life, photos, memories, thoughts
That’s it. Simple. Clean. Manageable.

🧩 Why this setup works

Instagram is for photos and short captions.
Facebook is for family, longer posts and photo albums.
Blogspot is where the deeper stories live - like a personal archive.

It’s like:
  • Instagram = the highlight reel
  • Facebook = the family dinner table
  • Blogspot = the private diary (but with better handwriting)

🛑 Why TikTok isn’t necessary for everyone

Some people say, “But TikTok is everywhere!”
Yes - like mosquitoes in summer. 🦟

But unless you:
  • enjoy making short videos
  • want to follow trends
  • or want to reach a younger audience
you don’t need it.

And honestly, for a personal blog + photos, it’s often more noise than value.

🚫 What I’m NOT doing

I’m not on TikTok, Snapchat or anything that feels like a full-time job.
I’m here for memories, not trends.

🧓 Why older people believe everything online

This part is important - and a little scary.

Many people my age (and not just my age) tend to believe what they see online because:
  • It looks “official”
  • It comes from a friend or family member
  • It’s emotionally charged
  • They don’t know how misinformation spreads
  • They don’t check the source
And yes, fake news is made to look real.
It’s like a magician - but instead of rabbits, it pulls fear and confusion out of a hat. 🎩🐇

🧯 The simple way to protect yourself

Here’s a quick checklist I use:
✔️ Check the source (Is it credible?)
✔️  Look for proof (Any links or evidence?)
✔️ Watch for emotions (Anger or fear = red flag)
✔️ Search the photo (Reverse image search)
✔️ Check other sources (Did reputable outlets report it?)

If unsure, pause → verify → share.

🧠 Real example

I’ve seen posts claiming “this medicine cures everything” or “this government rule is happening tomorrow” - and none of it was true.
That’s how quickly misinformation spreads.

🔒 A quick reminder about privacy

Not everything needs to be shared.
Sometimes your memories are best kept as your memories - especially when it involves family or personal details.

📝 Why Blogspot?

Blogspot isn’t flashy, but it’s a clean archive - my “digital scrapbook” that stays organised and easy to revisit.
It’s where I keep my longer stories, reflections and life moments in one place.

😂 Funny anecdote

I once saw a post saying, “If you drink water after midnight, your brain turns to jelly.”
I stared at it like… 🤨
Then I realized:
This is the same brain that believed the moon landing was staged…
but also thinks the earth is flat because “it looks flat.” 🌍😅

📣 If you want

If anyone wants, I can share a short checklist to spot fake news - just ask.

🧾 Conclusion

You don’t need to be on every app to stay connected or relevant.
Choose what fits your life.
Keep it simple. Keep it real.
And most importantly, don’t let online posts replace common sense.

One-sentence summary:
You don’t need every app - just the ones that fit your life.

And please: if it sounds too dramatic to be true, it probably is.

If you see me on TikTok, it means I lost a bet. 😂
