This post is a light-hearted personal reflection from someone whose birthday falls on 11 November. It contrasts the date’s modern commercial meaning as “11.11 / Singles’ Day” and related global sale events with its other associations (Black Friday / Cyber Monday and Remembrance Day). The author uses humour and a short anecdote to show how a personal milestone can be overshadowed by global retail events while still honouring the date’s solemn meaning.
Disclaimer The views expressed are personal and anecdotal. Historical and cultural references (Singles’ Day, Black Friday, Remembrance Day) are summarised for context and sourced from public records; readers seeking detailed history should consult primary sources. The post contains light humour intended for general audiences and is not meant to diminish the solemn observance of Remembrance Day.
🎉 11.11 - When My Birthday Became a Global Sale Day 😅🛍️
Everywhere I look - banners, notifications, influencers shouting into the void - “11.11 MEGA SALE! Up to 90% OFF!” 💥
And there I am, thinking… “That’s my birthday leh 😭🥺😵.”
Banar… global lagi tu! 🌏 What used to be my special day is now a worldwide shopping carnival - from Brunei to Beijing, Sydney to Seattle, everyone’s racing to check out their carts faster than I can blow out my candles. 🎂💨
✨ How it all started
Once upon a time in China, 11 November was known as Singles’ Day - a cheeky celebration for those not in relationships (the four “1”s symbolising single individuals). Then came the twist: e-commerce giants spotted the opportunity and transformed it into the biggest online shopping event on Earth. 💳🛒
Funny thing though - 11.11 wasn’t even a thing when Gen X babies like me started showing up. Singles’ Day only became popular in the 2000s when online shopping took off. So technically… I had the date first! 😆
Now, every year, 11.11 takes over screens and malls across Asia and beyond. Even Remembrance Day - which once defined the date with solemn reflection - gets quietly drowned out by discount codes and checkout timers. 🕯️➡️💸
🖤 Enter Black Friday & Cyber Monday
Not wanting to be left out, the West has its own mega sale right after Thanksgiving - Black Friday, followed by Cyber Monday. It began in the U.S. during the 1960s as a chaotic post-holiday shopping rush before being rebranded as the day stores go “into the black” (profit). Now, thanks to global e-commerce, November’s basically Discount Month! 😆
🎂 Meanwhile… me
Sometimes people greet me with, “Oh! 11.11 - Happy Singles’ Day!” or “Don’t forget the sale!” And I’m like… “Ya, ya, also my birthday, thank you very much.” 😂
Last year someone even wished me “Happy Birthday!” - then followed up with, “BTW, got Lazada link for that deal?” 🤦♀️
Imagine trying to celebrate with cake while everyone’s refreshing their carts for midnight drops - multitasking level 100! 🍰⏰🛍️
But to be fair, it’s not all bad. At least the world celebrates something on my day - even if it’s their shopping carts instead of my cake! Maybe next year I’ll join in and offer Buy 1 Get 1 Free hugs or 50% off good vibes only! 💕✨
Jokes aside, I still pause each year for a moment of silence - because 11.11 is also Remembrance Day, and some things truly deserve remembering beyond sales. 🌺
Maybe that’s the irony of it all - remembrance, reflection and retail, all bundled into one date. Life really knows how to mix it up.
💬 Moral of the story
When your birthday lands on 11.11, you don’t need party decorations - the entire internet has you covered. You just have to remind people the celebration started because you were born that day! 😆🎈
