Familiar Favorites: Food Without Surprises

This post explores my favorite dining spots, where I consistently return for familiar flavors, good service and a comfortable ambiance. While I enjoy discovering new places, the comfort of trusted favorites always calls me back. These eateries have earned their place due to their reliability, creating memorable meals without surprises.

The Creature of Habit: Eating Without Surprises... Mostly

For some, mealtime is all about routine. But for me, while I enjoy trying new food and exploring eateries, I always find my way back to my trusted favorites unless the new place strikes a chord with my tummy.

The comfort of familiar flavors is hard to beat. Whether it’s a favorite local café, a trusted restaurant, or a new spot that has earned its place among my defaults, the key is knowing what I’ll get will truly satisfy me. consistency is the secret to satisfaction.

My go-to places include Spoonful Restaurant, Taurean Cafe, Wisma Restaurant, Kedai Kopi D'Harith, Rumah Makan Lasung, Seri Damai, Ummi Salomeh, Ochado, Mr Baker’s, Rajah’s, Napori, Nouri, Excapade, Bread Parlour, Tati’s, Serai, Little Hotpot, ABC Eats, Chempaka Kitchen, Buffalo Asian Cuisine and newcomers like 1More Pizza, Kreme and Comfort Greens. These places have won me over with their consistency and comforting meals.

For instance:

Spoonful Restaurant offers a delightful mix of Asian and Western dishes, with popular noodle bowls and a satisfying selection of hi-tea treats. Whether it’s a hearty main or light snack, Spoonful serves comforting meals that hit the spot every time. My default order: Spoonful Laksa, Salted Egg Buttermilk Chicken Chop, Cucur Udang and Gado Gado (which they have stopped serving for now)

Taurean Cafe is celebrated for its freshly baked cookies, cheesecakes, salads and sandwiches. It's the perfect place to unwind, with a casual, welcoming atmosphere and indulgent comfort food. My default order: Roti Kuning Classic (Hands down the best in my book) and Teh ‘O’.

Wisma Restaurant is a local favorite, serving traditional dishes like roti, mee goreng mamak, nasi lemak and nasi campur, each full of rich, authentic flavors. It's where you can savor the essence of local cuisine in a cozy, old-school (with a touch of modernity) and familiar environment. My default order: Roti Telur Bawang with kari ayam & Dahl & iced Teh ‘O’, Sambal Terung is nyum.

Kedai Kopi D'Harith specializes in comforting local dishes like roast duck, roast chicken, kolomee (dry noodle), and rice. It's a reliable spot for a hearty, satisfying meal, especially perfect for breakfast or lunch. My default order: Roast Duck with super dry Kolomee, ginger sauce is the bomb with iced Teh ‘O’.

Rumah Makan Lasung offers Indonesian cuisine, with specialties like nasi padang, sambal goreng, fried chicken, and rendang. It's a place where the vibrant flavors and spices of Indonesian food can be savored in a casual and welcoming setting. My default order: Lasung Ayam Bakar with Nasi Uduk, the sambals are spicy and very spicy.

Seri Damai is a renowned Pakistani restaurant, offering rich and flavorful dishes like rotis, kebabs, biryanis and various curries. The authentic spices and hearty flavors make it a reliable spot for anyone craving Pakistani cuisine. My default order: Irani Botti, Kashmiri Naan & Channa Masala.

Ummi Salomeh is well-loved for its Malay fusion dishes, with specialties such as rotis, mee mamak, cucur udang, lekor and satay (not available currently) It’s the perfect place to enjoy flavorful, satisfying meals with a touch of spice. My default order: Roti Banjir Mata Lembu and Cucur Udang.

Ochado is a Taiwanese franchise offering a unique blend of food and beverages. It serves comfort food such as Nasi Lemak (coconut rice with chicken and curry sauce), Murtabaks, Pasta, Rice Bowls etc alongside a variety of bubble teas and refreshing drinks. Whether I’m in the mood for something savory or sweet, Ochado provides the perfect pairing of food and drinks. My default order: Nasi Lemak Ayam Kapitan (not available currently), Pisang Goreng Cheese and Roasted Milk Tea with Grass Jelly.

Mr Baker’s is renowned for its freshly baked bread and pastries. From soft, fluffy croissants to hearty loaves of bread, it's a perfect stop for a light breakfast or snack. My default order is: Breakfast set with half-boiled eggs and Cortado or Flat White.

Rajah’s is where I go for comforting Indian cuisine. Known for its flavorful curries, biryanis, and naan, Rajah's offers a rich dining experience full of spices and aromatic dishes. My default order: Chicken Momo, Butter Chicken, Peshwari Naan and Kashmiri Nuts Pulao rice.

Napori serves a fusion of Japanese and Italian cuisines, bringing together the best of both worlds. From pasta dishes infused with Japanese flavors to pizzas, Napori offers an innovative twist on familiar dishes, blending tradition with creativity. My default order: Mushroom Soup, Ebi Oglio Olio & Toryufu Pizza.

Nouri is known for its diverse menu that blends local and international flavors. Known for its fresh ingredients and meticulous presentation, Nouri delivers a top-notch dining experience every time. They have an extensive menu that caters from snacks to supper, I enjoyed their cakes, pastries, brunch offerings as well as their local favorites. Their Pizzas is not bad. My default order: Matcha Latte, Donuts and many more.

Excapade offers a wide variety of Japanese cuisine, from sushi to bento boxes, all prepared with the finest ingredients. It’s a reliable choice for delicious and fresh Japanese food, perfect for any occasion. My default order: Salmon Kyuri Roll, Salmon Uzukuri and many more.

Bread Parlour is where I indulge in freshly baked pastries and bread, perfect for a light breakfast or afternoon snack. The selection of savory and sweet treats never fails to satisfy. My default order: All Day Breakfast and Cream of Mushroom Soup, Matcha Latte, Cranberry Cinnamon Roll

Tati’s offers hearty comfort food, from flavorful local dishes to Western-inspired meals. It’s the kind of place that serves familiar, filling meals that feel like home. My default order: Satay, Sambal Terong and Fried Meehoon. They also have nice ‘Chai Kue’ like kueh.

Serai by Bunga Kilanas is known for its local Bruneian cuisine, with specialties like Ambuyat (a dish made from sago starch served with various dips), as well as other traditional dishes such as nasi lemak and mee goreng. It’s a great place to enjoy the unique flavors of Brunei. My Default order: Ambuyat set and Sambal Petai Udang.

Little Hotpot brings the best of hotpot dining, offering a variety of broths and fresh ingredients to cook right at the table. It’s the ideal spot for a fun and interactive meal with friends and family. They also offer ala carte dishes like fried noodles and desserts such as puddings and toast bread. My default order: Hotpot where I make my own dip concoction that can never be replicated or Fried Noodles. They used to have this Assam Chicken with rice that’s to die for.

ABC Eats serves tasty, quick bites, with a menu full of comfort food that’s perfect for a laid-back meal. It's one of my go-to spots for a fast, satisfying meal that never disappoints. My default order: Roti Telur Bawang, Nasi Kandar Banjir, Triple Cheese Naan.

Mei Lin Chempaka Kitchen, is a non-halal Chinese restaurant, offering a wide range of Chinese dishes. From flavorful stir-fries to delicious pork ribs, they serve hearty meals in a casual setting, ideal for those craving authentic Chinese flavors. My default order: Depends on the Chef’s recommendations. They also have rice dumplings for sale during the Dragon Boat Festival each year. Note: They are only open for dinner service.

Buffalo Asian Cuisine impresses with its diverse menu featuring Southeast Asian specialties and fusion delights. They are known for their selection of local pastries, sweets and kuehs, made fresh daily as well as nasi lemak, noodles and western menu of steaks and pasta. My default order: Popiah and Ching Tang and Iced Lemon Barley drink

Comfort Greens offers a variety of healthy and wholesome dishes, including salads, wraps and smoothies. They cater to those seeking nutritious meal options. My default order: Watermelon, Avocado and Feta Salad, Sweet Potato Fries and Matcha Latte.

1More Pizza is a pizza brand in Brunei that serves high-quality Neapolitan pizzas with unique East Asian flavors. They focus on using the best locally sourced ingredients to create flavorful and healthy pizzas.

KRÈME de la crème is a specialty coffee and tea shop. They offer a variety of pastries and cakes to complement their beverages.

And when I feel like discovering something new, I embrace the adventure. But unless the new place creates a lasting impression with its flavors, I find comfort in going back to my familiar haunts.

Food is an experience, whether it's the thrill of discovery or the warmth of routine. And for this creature of habit, it’s all about balancing the best of both worlds. It’s about finding places that feel authentic, offer great service and allow me to enjoy my meal in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.
