🥢 Gua Sha 101: Ancient Scrapes & Modern Chills 💆‍♀️

So… you just had a Gua Sha session - maybe on your shoulders, maybe on your face or maybe you bravely let someone go to town on your entire back like it was a wok full of stuck rice 🍳.

What now? Can you shower? Can you bath? Why do you look like you've been in a lightsaber fight?

Let’s break it down ✂️👇

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha (刮痧) is a traditional healing method involving scraping the skin with a smooth tool (usually jade, quartz or stone) to improve blood flow, release tension and shift stagnant “qi” (energy). It’s like giving your body a deep-tissue wake-up call - with style.

You may have seen the facial version all over Instagram (cue glowy skin and jade rollers), but the body version is the OG - think shoulders, back, neck, arms.

🚿 To Shower or Not to Shower?

Short answer: Wait before you bathe like a hotpot ingredient. 🍲

If your session was on the shoulders or body:
  • 🕓 Wait 4-6 hours, or better yet, 12–24 hours before showering.
  • ❄️ Why? Your pores are open, your circulation is heightened and cold water = an invitation to chills and fatigue.
  • 💧 If you must shower: Use warm water, avoid long exposure to the treated area and no scrubbing or fancy soaps.

Can you bathe below the shoulders?
  • ✅ Yes - just keep the shoulder area dry and warm. Think shawl chic.
  • 🧣 Tip: Wrap a towel over your shoulders like you're in a dramatic telenovela scene.

If it was a facial Gua Sha:
  • 🕑 Wait at least 1-2 hours before washing your face.
  • ✨ Stick to gentle cleansers. Your face just did a gym workout, not a mud run.

💬 Real Talk

A friend once tried a post-Gua Sha cold shower. Let’s just say… her muscles didn’t speak to her for three days. She also briefly became a human thermometer - shivering at 28°C. Don’t be like her.

✅ Post-Gua Sha Aftercare Checklist

☑️ Stay warm
☑️ Drink warm water
☑️ Avoid cold drafts/fans/aircon
☑️ Rest if needed
☑️ Admire your temporary sha marks like warrior badges 🏅
☑️ Thank your lymph nodes - they worked overtime

🌿 Final Thoughts

Whether you did Gua Sha for tension relief, glow-up skincare or ancient healing vibes, treat your body gently afterward. It’s not just about scraping - it’s about resetting.

Take it as a cue to slow down, stay warm and maybe nap like the regal dumpling you are 🥟.
