💼 Success? Not Quite What You Think. Here's Mine.
Let’s talk about success.
Not the cookie-cutter LinkedIn version that comes with yachts, unicorn startups and perfect teeth.
For the longest time, I felt I wasn’t “there yet.” No house in Bali. No five-step morning routine endorsed by a TED speaker. Just me, six senior cats (three with separation anxiety), an ICT career that’s anything but linear and the lingering trauma of managing Gen Z during peak pandemic-era work culture.
But maybe... just maybe, success isn’t about ticking off boxes on a societal checklist.
🧭 My Kind of Success
Here’s what I’ve learned:
Success, for me, looks like this:
✅ Waking up with purpose — even when the world spins sideways.
✅ Seeing projects come to life — that connect Brunei’s digital future to today’s needs.
✅ Mentoring and managing — without losing my mind (though I came close circa 2023).
✅ Embracing weirdness — like feeling more at ease with raw crystals than with boardroom jargon.
✅ Surviving setbacks — personal, professional, hormonal — and still showing up.
✅ Not working with Gen Z anymore — because therapy is expensive. (Kidding. Kind of.)
💡 A Values Compass That Keeps Me Grounded
I’m guided by:
- Resilience – because life will test you.
- Service – Brunei's digital transformation isn’t a buzzword to me; it’s a legacy.
- Authenticity – even if it means being the “odd one out.”
- Creativity – expressed through bookmaking, crystal crafting and origami (yes, that too).
- Empathy – for humans, animals and anyone who’s had to Google “how to fix your life in your 50s.”
If you’ve ever felt behind, out of place or just plain tired of pretending you’ve got it all together — same. But let me tell you: there’s power in knowing who you are, what you value and why you still show up.
🐾 Bonus: A Quick Cat Antidote
One of my cats recently tried to sneak into a Zoom call. He sat directly on my keyboard, typed “hhhhhh,” then stared at me like he was the COO.
Honestly? I’ve met human colleagues less competent.
🎯 Final Thoughts
So… am I successful?
Yes. Not by their standards — but by mine.
Success is surviving, healing, creating and still believing in impact. It’s finding meaning in quiet contributions, soft rebellion and spiritual clarity. It’s staying kind, even when the world’s loud. It’s cats, crystals and cabling projects. It’s me, on my terms.
If you’ve redefined success in your own way — tell me. What does it look like for you? 👇
Let’s normalize success that’s real, not just resume-worthy.
