A lighthearted exploration of how multiple crafts — cardmaking, bookmaking, crystal bracelet making and origami — intertwine, sharing tools and inspirations. The narrative humorously addresses the ever-growing collection of materials, especially when recycling and repurposing are involved, and reflects on the joy and challenges of returning to creative projects after a hiatus.

Scraps, Spines & Sparkles: My Cross-Hobby Journey
Fifteen years ago, I returned home to Brunei from Perth with more than just a suitcase — I came back with an itch to make things. That creative itch turned into several hobbies: cardmaking, bookmaking, crystal bracelet making and origami. It sounds like a lot — and it is. But somewhere between folding paper, threading beads and sewing book spines, I found my rhythm.
It started with paper. Cards, frames and decorative gift wrapping became my go-to handmade touches. Then came bookmaking — thanks to Rozi from Make A Book Brunei (IG: makeabook.bn), who ran the workshops that first got me hooked. Stitching spines, pressing covers and folding signatures became deeply meditative — like journaling, but with glue and thread. Origami naturally folded itself into the mix (pun fully intended), and now, it’s part of my craft DNA.
As for crystal bracelet making… well, I only have two wrists and I can’t stack that many bracelets on one arm. So, I did the logical thing — I started making my own. That way, I could rotate designs, gift the extras and still satisfy my love for crystals without looking like I raided a gem stall.
One thing that makes all these hobbies easier (and harder) is how well the tools overlap. My trusty bone folder, craft knife, pliers, needles, threads, punches — they all moonlight in different roles depending on the project. It's efficient… in theory. In practice? The materials mysteriously multiply. I swear, every time I make a bracelet, three new bead strands sneak into my stash. Cardstock breeds like rabbits. Ribbons? Don't get me started.
And because I recycle, reuse and repurpose everything I can, nothing ever leaves. A pretty tag from a shopping bag? Saved. Broken necklace clasp? Repurposed. Scrap from an old bookbinding project? Filed under “future inspiration.” My craft area might look like chaos, but to me, it’s organized sentimentality.
Right now, though, all of it is packed away while I prepare to move and (hopefully) declutter. I’ve got some overdue handmade gifts waiting to be finished — each one promised to someone dear — and I know when I finally unpack, those pieces will be a comforting way to reconnect with the people I’ve made them for… and with the version of me that finds joy in the little details.
Cross-hobbies, I've come to realize, aren’t about doing more — they’re about finding flow. Letting one craft inspire the next. Letting your tools work smarter, not harder. And letting yourself enjoy the mess, even if the materials seem to reproduce overnight like rogue glitter.
So if you’re creatively stuck, maybe it’s time to let your hobbies mingle. Just be warned: once they start talking to each other, your storage situation may never be the same again.
