A World on My Plate

This post reflects my culinary journey, highlighting dishes from countries I have yet to visit but experienced through Australia’s cosmopolitan dining scene. It emphasizes the cultural richness of global cuisines, with a special note on my favorite dishes (marked ✨). Global Culinary Adventures: Must-Try Dishes From Around the World


When traveling, experiencing local cuisine is one of the highlights. Exploring the world through food offers an exciting journey of diverse flavors, traditions and cultures. Here’s a delicious list of must-eat foods from the countries I’ve visited and others I’m eager to explore!

Although I have not had the opportunity to explore some of the listed countries, my years in Australia allowed me to experience a rich array of global cuisines. Thanks to the multicultural nature of Australian cities, I was able to savor iconic dishes from around the world without leaving the country. From the vibrant flavors of Vietnamese pho to the comforting warmth of Italian gelato, living in cosmopolitan cities exposed me to the incredible diversity and richness of international culinary traditions. 

Foods marked with a ✨ are personal favorites that left a lasting impression on my taste buds.

🇦🇺 Australia

Melbourne

Flat White Coffee: A rich espresso-based coffee with velvety steamed milk, offering a perfect balance of bold flavor and creamy texture.

Laneway Cafés: Renowned for their artisanal coffee and innovative breakfast menus in Melbourne’s vibrant laneways.

Meat Pies: Flaky pastries filled with savory minced meat, gravy and sometimes vegetables or cheese, a quintessential Aussie snack.

Sydney

Sydney Rock Oysters: Fresh, briny oysters native to Australia, known for their creamy texture and slightly sweet flavor. Often enjoyed raw with a squeeze of lemon or mignonette sauce.

Beachside Fish and Chips: Crispy battered fish served with golden fries, often wrapped in paper for a nostalgic seaside meal.

Perth

Barramundi Fish: A tender, flaky fish with a mild, buttery flavor, often grilled or pan-seared and paired with local wines.

Pavlova: A light, meringue-based dessert with a crispy shell and marshmallow-like center, topped with whipped cream and fresh fruits like kiwi, passionfruit, or strawberries.

🇧🇳 Brunei

Nasi Katok: A humble dish featuring steamed white rice, crispy fried chicken and sambal — a spicy chili paste that adds a fiery kick.

Ambuyat: A sticky, translucent dish made from sago starch, typically dipped into flavorful sauces like fermented durian (tempoyak) or sour lime (cacah binjai). It’s eaten by twirling the sago onto bamboo sticks (chandas).


Buttermilk Chicken: Juicy fried chicken pieces coated in a creamy, sweet and savory buttermilk sauce, often enhanced with curry leaves and chilies for added aroma and spice.


🇭🇰 Hong Kong

Dim Sum (點心) A medley of small dishes served in bamboo steamers or on small plates, often shared with tea. 

Har Gow (蝦餃): Translucent dumplings filled with plump shrimp and sometimes bamboo shoots for crunch.

Siu Mai (燒賣): Open-topped dumplings of pork, shrimp, and mushroom, garnished with crab roe or diced carrot.

Char Siu Bao (叉燒包): Steamed buns stuffed with sweet, smoky BBQ pork.

Cheung Fun (腸粉): Silky rice noodle rolls with shrimp, BBQ pork or beef, served with sweet soy sauce.

Lo Mai Gai (糯米雞): Fragrant sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, packed with chicken, Chinese sausage and mushrooms.

Kuala Lumpur

Ba Kut Teh (肉骨茶): is tender pork ribs simmered in a rich herbal broth made from spices like star anise, cinnamon and Chinese herbs.

Penang

Penang Laksa: A tangy, spicy noodle soup with tamarind, mackerel and fresh herbs.


Char Kway Teow (炒粿條): Stir-fried rice noodles with prawns, eggs and bean sprouts.


Oyster Omelette (蠔煎): Crispy omelette with fresh oysters, garnished with cilantro.


Sabah

🇦🇷 Argentina

Asado: A traditional barbecue and social event in Argentina, featuring various cuts of beef, pork, and sausages grilled over an open flame. The meats are seasoned simply with salt and served with chimichurri sauce.


Empanadas: Pastry pockets filled with a variety of savory fillings such as minced beef, chicken, cheese, or vegetables. They are baked or fried to achieve a golden, flaky crust.



🇨🇳 China

Peking Duck (北京烤鴨): Crisp-skinned roasted duck served with pancakes, hoisin sauce, scallions, and cucumbers.

Hot Pot (火鍋): A communal meal where diners cook ingredients like meats, seafood, and vegetables in boiling broth at the table.


Shanghai Dumplings (小籠包, Xiao Long Bao): Steamed dumplings filled with soup and pork, served with ginger and vinegar.



🇫🇷 France

Escargot: Snails cooked in garlic butter, parsley and white wine, served as an appetizer.


Crêpes: Thin pancakes with sweet (e.g., Nutella or fruit) or savory (e.g., ham and cheese) fillings.

Macarons: Delicate almond meringue cookies with creamy flavored fillings like chocolate, raspberry or pistachio.


🇩🇪 Germany

Schnitzel: Thin, breaded, and fried cutlets of meat, typically veal or pork, served with lemon and potatoes.

Bratwurst: Flavorful sausages made from pork, beef or veal, grilled or pan-fried and often 
served with mustard.

Sauerkraut: A traditional German side dish made from fermented cabbage, typically seasoned with salt and sometimes caraway seeds, juniper berries, or vinegar. 

Schweinshaxe: A beloved German dish made from a whole pork knuckle that’s slow-roasted or braised until the skin is crispy and the meat is tender and juicy.

Pretzel (Brezn): A traditional German baked dough product, known for its distinct knot shape. It’s typically soft, with a slightly crispy, salty crust and a chewy interior. 

Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte): A rich, layered chocolate cake filled with whipped cream, cherries, and a splash of Kirsch (cherry schnapps). 


Apfelstrudel: A traditional German dessert made from thin layers of dough filled with spiced apples, raisins and cinnamon.


🇬🇷 Greece

Moussaka: A layered casserole of eggplant, minced meat and creamy béchamel sauce.

Souvlaki: Skewered and grilled meat, served with pita, tzatziki (yogurt cucumber sauce) and salad.

Dolmades: Grape leaves stuffed with a mixture of rice, herbs and sometimes minced meat. 

Spanakopita: A savory Greek pie made with layers of crispy phyllo pastry and a filling of spinach, feta cheese and herbs. 

Gyro: Made with meat (usually pork, chicken or lamb) cooked on a vertical rotisserie, then sliced and served in pita bread with tomatoes, onions and tzatziki.


Baklava: Flaky pastry layers filled with chopped nuts and soaked in sweet honey or syrup.


🇮🇳 India

Biryani: A fragrant rice dish cooked with spices, meat or vegetables, often topped with fried onions and boiled eggs.

Butter Chicken: A rich, creamy chicken curry made with tomatoes, butter and a mix of spices.

Palak Paneer:  A vegetarian curry made with paneer (Indian cottage cheese) cooked in a smooth, spiced spinach (palak) gravy.

Rogan Josh: A flavorful, aromatic curry made with lamb or goat, cooked in a spiced yogurt-based sauce.

Lasagna: A layered pasta dish made with sheets of lasagna noodles, ricotta cheese, meat sauce (usually made with beef or pork), marinara sauce and mozzarella, then baked until bubbly and golden.

Risotto: A creamy rice dish cooked slowly in broth and stirred constantly. The base can vary, from mushrooms to seafood or saffron.


Osso Buco: A traditional Milanese dish made with braised veal shanks cooked in white wine, broth and vegetables.


Frittata: An Italian-style omelette, typically filled with vegetables, meats, cheeses or herbs.

Gnocchi: Soft, pillowy dumplings made from mashed potatoes, flour and eggs, often served with a variety of sauces, such as tomato sauce, butter and sage or pesto.


Tiramisu: A popular Italian dessert made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, cocoa powder and a dusting of cocoa.

Ravioli: Square or round pasta pockets filled with a variety of ingredients, from ricotta cheese and spinach to meat or seafood.

🇯🇵 Japan

Sushi: Vinegared rice with toppings like fresh fish, vegetables, or egg, often rolled in seaweed.

Ramen: Noodles served in a flavorful broth with toppings like pork, eggs and scallions.


Tempura: Lightly battered and fried seafood or vegetables, served with dipping sauce.

Soba: Thin buckwheat noodles served either cold with dipping sauce or in hot broth.


Gyoza: Pan-fried dumplings filled with ground meat and vegetables, often served with a soy-based dipping sauce.


🇰🇷 Korea

Bibimbap: A colorful rice bowl topped with vegetables, meat, and egg, mixed with chili paste.

Shawarma: Made of marinated meat (often chicken, lamb or beef) that is cooked on a vertical rotisserie, then thinly sliced and served in pita bread or flatbreads with vegetables and sauces, such as tahini or garlic sauce.


Knafeh: A sweet dessert made from shredded filo dough layered with sweetened cheese or semolina, then soaked in syrup and topped with pistachios.

Baklava: A popular Lebanese dessert made from layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts (usually pistachios or walnuts), sweetened with honey or syrup.


🇲🇽 Mexico

Tacos: Soft or crispy tortillas filled with seasoned meats, seafood or vegetables.

Guacamole: A creamy dip made with mashed avocado, lime, cilantro and chili.

Quesadilla: Tortillas filled with cheese and optional meats or veggies, toasted until crispy.


Enchiladas: Corn tortillas filled with meat, cheese or beans, rolled up and smothered in a rich, flavorful chili sauce.

Burritos: Large flour tortillas filled with a variety of ingredients, such as beans, rice, meats, guacamole, sour cream and cheese.

Tamales: A traditional Mexican dish made from masa (corn dough) filled with meats, cheese or vegetables, wrapped in corn husks and steamed.

Fajitas: Grilled strips of marinated meat, such as beef, chicken or shrimp, served with sautéed bell peppers, onions and tortillas.

Ceviche: A refreshing dish made from raw fish or seafood marinated in lime or lemon juice, then mixed with tomatoes, onions, cilantro and chilli peppers.

Churros: Fried dough pastry, coated in cinnamon sugar and often served with a side of chocolate sauce for dipping.


🇲🇦 Morocco

Tagine: A slow-cooked stew of meats, vegetables and spices, named after the earthenware pot it’s cooked in.


Couscous: Steamed semolina grains served as a side or with meat and vegetable stews.

Pastilla: A Moroccan savory pastry, combines pigeon (or chicken), almonds and spices wrapped in thin layers of phyllo dough, traditionally dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon.

Mechoui: Made of whole roasted lamb or mutton, typically cooked over an open fire or in a traditional oven. The meat is seasoned with garlic, cumin and coriander, served with flatbread to soak up the juices.

Kefta: Spiced meatballs, typically made with ground lamb or beef, mixed with onions, parsley and a blend of spices. Often grilled or cooked in a tomato-based sauce.

Zaalouk: A traditional Moroccan eggplant salad made with eggplant, tomatoes, garlic and a combination of spices such as cumin, paprika and coriander.

Moroccan Mint Tea: The national drink, Moroccan mint tea is a blend of green tea, fresh mint leaves and sugar.


🇳🇵 Nepal

Momos: Steamed dumplings filled with spiced meats or vegetables, served with a tangy dipping sauce.


Dal Bhat: A staple meal of lentil soup served over steamed rice, often accompanied by vegetables and pickles.

Chatamari: The "Nepali pizza," is a rice crepe topped with a variety of ingredients, such as minced meat, vegetables and spices.

Chura: Also known as beaten rice, is flattened rice that is often served as part of a light breakfast or as a snack.

Yomari: A special steamed dumpling made from rice flour and filled with a sweet filling of sugar, jaggery and sesame seeds, or chocolate.

Chiya: Nepali tea is a strong, spiced milk tea typically brewed with tea leaves, milk, sugar and a mixture of spices such as cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and ginger.


🇵🇰 Pakistan

Karahi: A spicy curry made with chicken or mutton, cooked with tomatoes, ginger and spices in a wok-like pan.

Nihari: A slow-cooked stew of meat, typically beef or lamb, flavored with aromatic spices, garnished with ginger and coriander.

Shami Kebab: A type of ground meat kebab, made with chicken, beef or mutton mixed with lentils and spices, slow-cooked and then fried.

Sheer Khurma: A sweet milk pudding made with vermicelli, milk, sugar, dates and nuts.

Gulab Jamun: A beloved dessert made from deep-fried dough balls soaked in rose water and sugar syrup.

Chana Chaat: A spicy chickpea salad, made with boiled chickpeas, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and flavored with lemon, coriander and chilli powder.


Raita: A yogurt-based side dish, often made with cucumber, mint and spices like cumin and chili powder.


🇵🇹 Portugal

Pastéis de Nata: Creamy custard tarts with a caramelized top, nestled in a flaky pastry shell.


Bacalhau: A versatile dish featuring salted cod, often baked or fried with potatoes and onions.

Francesinha: A Portuguese-style sandwich, layered with steak, sausage and cheese, then topped with a rich tomato and beer-based sauce.

Cozido à Portuguesa: A traditional Portuguese stew made with a variety of meats, including beef, pork, chicken and sausage, along with vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and cabage.

Arroz de Marisco: A popular Portuguese seafood rice dish made with a mix of fresh shellfish, fish and rice, cooked together in a flavorful broth with tomatoes, garlic and herbs.

Chouriço: A smoked sausage made with pork, garlic and paprika.


Peri Peri Chicken: Chicken is marinated in a tangy, spicy peri peri sauce before being grilled or roasted.



🇪🇸 Spain

Paella: A saffron-infused rice dish cooked with seafood, chicken or rabbit, mixed with vegetables and spices.


Tortilla Española: A thick, egg-based omelette with potatoes and onions.

Churros: Fried dough pastries, crispy outside and soft inside, served with chocolate for dipping.


Croquetas (Croquettes): Fried balls of béchamel sauce mixed with ham, chicken or fish, coated in breadcrumbs.

Calamares a la :mana (Fried Squid Rings): Lightly battered and deep-fried squid rings, served with lemon or aioli.

Turrón (Nougat): A traditional sweet made from honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds

Sangria: A fruity wine punch made with red wine, fruit and sometimes brandy or soda.


Tapas (Various Small Dishes):
  • Patatas Bravas – Crispy fried potatoes served with a spicy tomato sauce or aioli.
  • Gambas al Ajillo – Shrimp sautéed in olive oil with garlic and chilli.

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka

Kottu Roti: Stir-fried chopped flatbread (roti) with vegetables, eggs and/or meat, seasoned with spices and curry.

Lamprais: A Dutch-influenced dish consisting of rice, curry, sambols and fried eggs, wrapped in banana leaves and baked.

Fish Ambul Thiyal (Sour Fish Curry): A tangy fish curry cooked with tamarind, spices and dried goraka (a sour fruit).

Devilled Dishes Chicken/Fish/Prawns: Spicy and sweet stir-fried dishes flavored with chilli, onions, and soy sauce.

Watalappam: A rich coconut milk pudding flavored with jaggery, cardamom and cashews, often served as a dessert.

Pittu: Steamed cylinders of rice flour and coconut, often served with curry or coconut milk.


Sri Lankan Crab Curry: A luxurious dish featuring crab cooked in a rich, spicy curry sauce with coconut milk and a medley of spices.


String Hoppers (Idiyappam): Steamed rice flour noodles, served with coconut sambol and curry.


Hoppers (Appam): Bowl-shaped pancakes made from fermented rice flour and coconut milk. Variations include:
  • Egg Hoppers – A hopper with an egg cooked in the center.
  • Plain Hoppers – Without egg, served with sambols or curry.


🇹🇷 Turkey

Kebabs (Kebap): A variety of grilled or skewered meats, ranging from lamb and chicken to beef, marinated in spices and cooked over open flame, include Adana kebab (spicy ground meat), 
Shish kebab (chunks of meat on skewers) and Doner Kebab (Thinly sliced meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie) , often served with flatbread, rice, or vegetables.

Lahmacun:  "Turkish Pizza," a thin flatbread topped with minced meat, vegetables and spices, usually rolled with fresh greens and lemon.

Manti: Small dumplings filled with minced meat, served with yogurt and garlic sauce and topped with melted butter and paprika.

Karnıyarık: Stuffed eggplants filled with ground meat, onions, tomatoes and spices, baked to perfection.

Köfte: Turkish meatballs made with spiced minced meat, grilled or fried, and often served with pilaf or salad.

Gözleme: Thin, savory flatbread stuffed with fillings like cheese, spinach or minced meat, cooked on a griddle.


Midye Dolma: Stuffed mussels filled with spiced rice, typically enjoyed with a squeeze of lemon.

Baklava: Layered pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey.

Künefe: A dessert made from shredded pastry dough soaked in syrup and layered with melted cheese, often topped with pistachios.


Tulumba: Fried dough pastries soaked in syrup, similar to churros but sweeter.

Turkish Tea (Çay): Strong black tea served in small tulip-shaped glasses.

Turkish Coffee (Türk Kahvesi): Thick, strong coffee served in small cups, often accompanied by Turkish delight.



🇻🇳 Vietnam

Pho (Vietnamese Noodle Soup): A hearty soup made with aromatic beef or chicken broth, flat rice noodles, and toppings like sliced meat, herbs and lime.


Bánh Mì (Vietnamese Sandwich): A crispy baguette filled with pâté, pickled vegetables, cilantro, chilli and meats like pork or chicken.

Gỏi Cuốn (Fresh Spring Rolls): Rice paper rolls stuffed with shrimp, pork, vermicelli and herbs, served with peanut or hoisin sauce.

Cơm Tấm (Broken Rice): Steamed broken rice served with grilled pork, fried egg, pickled vegetables and fish sauce.



Conclusion

Living in a cosmopolitan country like Australia has been a blessing for someone who loves food and culture. It shows how food can connect us to places we’ve never been, offering a taste of their history, traditions and soul. While I dream of traveling to these countries someday to experience their authentic cuisines, I’m grateful for the opportunity to have tried some of their iconic dishes right where I lived. For now, these dishes will continue to inspire my culinary adventures and cultural curiosity.
